We practice kendo, Iaido and Kenjutsu at the University of Texas at El Paso as part of Professional and Continuing Education (P.A.C.E.). Our program is open to almost everyone and you DO NOT have to be enrolled at UTEP to participate. P.A.C.E. courses have special pricing that allow you to participate with very little expense.

The Official Course Description

Kendo is the art of traditional Japanese fencing, developed from the sword methods of the samurai. Kendo is practiced by over 8 million men & women throughout the world and is considered to be as popular in Japan as football is in the United States. Practitioners use bamboo swords (shinai) and special protective equipment (bogu) to safely engage a partner in a contest of disciplined skill and technique in an attempt to score a proper hit to one of four primary targets on the partner. Basic skills are developed through solitary and paired practice of footwork, sword grip, striking, distancing, timing and attitude. Iaido is the art of drawing the sword from the scabbard and cutting with it. Participants use a wooden (bokken) or unsharpened practice sword (iaito) to practice proper technique by performing various prearranged sets of movements (kata). Also covered are various topics in kenjutsu, which is the foundation of much of kendo & iaido. All levels are welcome. Minimum equipment requirement: 1 wooden and 1 bamboo sword, available from instructor or various approved sources at minimal cost. Other equipment eventually recommended. Instructors are members of the All US Kendo Federation and teach under the mentorship of Miyahara Sensei, 8th dan, Hanshi who is the highest ranking kendo instructor in America.
